Daphne and Chloe Are Alive and Well and Living in Boston

leave a comment »

It has been ages since we catblogged, but that is mere negligence on our part. Daphne and Chloe are well and enjoying life in Boston. Of course, it is true that Chloe has developed an eating disorder, and now needs to be fed on a schedule, but we’re confident that has nothing to do with the pace of city life. They have both settled into comfortable routines although it is also true that Daphne now demands trout for breakfast with unseemly regularity. They both remain a bit high-strung, but there has been a diminution in the level of violence. Greater age and wisdom no doubt. Well, age, in any event. Here they are:

Chloe can be particular about the grooming habits of others, often making sure that one is fully scrubbed. Sometimes, she conducts snap inspections after one gets out of the shower. Here, she’s decided that Daphne needs a little help behind the ears.

Daphne doesn’t mind.

Slow Cat Week

leave a comment »

It’s been a slow cat week here at Villa MartiniPundit. Daphne is asleep:

And Chloe indulges in the peculiar Maine Coon habit of bathing. This is voluntary folks:

So we thought we’d update you on the progress of the guest kittens, Lymond, Phillipa, and Sybilla, as some pictures were thoughtfully sent along. As you can see, they’re growing, but size is not yet a problem:

Meanwhile, Phillipa, at least, has decided that there are no boundaries, even if the seating preference is odd:

And they’ve discovered that some things on TV are actually worth watching:

We don’t get the aquarium channel in these parts, but I’m sure Daphne and Chloe have a call in to the local cable provider …

Daphne at One

Daphne is shortly a year old now, and spends a lot of her time under things. She does, however, occasionally get on top:

And, from time to time, she deigns to be sociable:

But of course, the horrific violence continues unabated:

Cool City Cats

leave a comment »

May was unseasonably cool here in Massachusetts, hovering in the low 40s for most of the month and raining much of the time. This Daphne and Chloe took in stride, although it did cut down some on their morning bird-watching rituals. However, with June has come heat, and it’s been in the 90s for much of the last week. This, they did not take to well as it appears that no one actually told them it could get this hot or that this part of the country has 50 degree shifts in a matter of days as part of the normal weather pattern. Daphne has spent most of her time thus finding cool stretches of hardwood to spread out on:

This has caused her to spend more time than is typical about my desk, and I’ve had to avoid rolling over her with a chair a couple of times. That, I’m sure, she would take to most poorly. Meanwhile, Chloe has found her own solution lounging on a plastic bin that’s out temporarily:

We’re not sure if it’s cooler on top of that, or she just enjoys the novelty. But she’s a cat, and so multi-tasking while not actually doing anything comes naturally to her.

Guest Cats

A good friend recently acquired some kittens. He says they only intended to get two, but I count three in the pictures. They are a quite adorable set of littermates. This is Phillipa and Lymond:

And this is Sybilla:

Current Lord of the Manor Tristan apparently alternates between “glowering” and “apoplectic.” I suspect he’ll come around – three such hotties will no doubt melt the old curmudgeon’s heart. Daphne and Chloe, however, could not be reached for comment.

Sick Cats

leave a comment »

Daphne and Chloe have been under the weather this week, and so have been less than active except for various unpleasant ’emissions,’ of which we will speak no more. Here they are at their more vivified:

The vet says it’s our fault as we switched cat food brands on them. I think they’re just doing an exceptional job of skylarking.

Update Just to clarify, this is a picture of them from this week, at a time when they were being more active. Overall sleeping was up about 50% this week.

The Return of Chloe and Daphne

leave a comment »

We have been somewhat remiss in catblogging of late, but in truth, Chloe and Daphne have made poor subjects in recent weeks basically spending 99.99% of their time sleeping and then .01% doing cool things when the camera’s in the other room. But, without further ado, Chloe and Daphne return:

Of course, the horrifying level of violence has yet to abate:

And who’s on top may even be deceiving:

In passing, we’d also like to note Chloe’s first birthday was last week, but even so, she has yet to grow tired of the box top we were about to discard instead of the nice fleece bed we actually went out and bought for her special-like!

Yeah, I do know better, but honestly, wouldn’t you prefer a nice fleece?

Cats 0, Toys 2

In the grand scheme of things, it’s a wonder the toys survive at all – but not today. This one took care of Chloe:

And I have no idea what the fish did to Daphne:

We won’t be taking those toys for granted anymore.

New Sleeping Arrangements

leave a comment »

As a followup to last week where I noted that the cats are not thrilled with New England winters, I present some of the other new sleeping arrangements the ladies have come up with. Chloe, for example, has taken to sleeping under my desk:

This has the drawback of she occasionally nips my toes when she wants something, like a drink or a piece of salmon. Meanwhile, Daphne has found something more akin to a perch:

And no, you don’t get to ask what a giant Oscar Mayer Wienermobile is doing at Villa MartiniPundit.

Chloe Is Warm

leave a comment »

It’s been cold here in Massachusetts and while we get good heat in Villa MartiniPundit we’ve been trying to avoid turning it up too high. Daphne and Chloe are not thrilled with this decision, but neither can they reach the thermostat. So we’ve seen some altered behavior, new sleeping spots nearer to heating elements, and then this:

First Chloe discovered the blanket and then Daphne discovered that she could siphon off Chloe’s body heat. Shamelessly clever.

Cats Sans Shame

Cats are notoriously without shame (I believe the great philosopher George Carlin once remarked on this) and Chloe and Daphne are no exceptions. This vision was bad enough:

But Daphne has a long way to go to top this:

Chloe Power Washer

leave a comment »

From time to time, Chloe feels the need to demonstrate her power washing technique to Daphne. This typically involves immobilizing the poor creature so Chloe can power wash with minimal interruption. Here we see that Daphne’s ears need some attention:

Also today, a bonus shot of a weirdly lit, faux watercolor Daphne:

Because Photoshop was just sitting there, and she’d never sit still for the real thing anyway.

Carnival of the Cats #41

leave a comment »

“Thousands of years ago, cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.” (Anonymous)

We’re very pleased to host the first Carnival of the Cats of the new year, and the 41st of the series. Leading off and looking us straight in the eye as a cat should is Tushki, owner of Ishtiaque:

If Hakuna and Matata missed their humans, they quickly got over it by asserting their place in the household hierarchy. Meanwhile, some cats are planning on observing the New Year. Some are so serious that they’ve blogged on the subject. Others celebrate in the time-honored tradition of helping out as only cats can, while some cats understand that the whole resolution thing is an exercise in self-delusion and want no part of it. Of course, sleeping is a perfectly acceptable response by cats to any holiday devised solely for humans to keep track of time. Sleeping has so many permutations, it could take eons to try them all:

Spider understands. After all, if a cool cat like Mister Gato can take time from his busy schedule of rodent termination … More busy cats. But clearly, Tiny and Baby really know how to party. More importantly, it’s Mark’s first anniversary which must surely trump New Year’s. Similarly, Whitty turns ten, a grand age, but apparently the years have held some tragedy, including a run in with some dingoes. Oreo demands affection. Izzy, Meowza, Bazel and Jezi demand their share of the feast, even if that means being the centerpiece. Courtesy of Rahel, we learn of some adorable cats for adoption.

She also grasps the key concept in feline relations: hear and obey. Meanwhile, there’s a blog devoted to finding good homes for strays. Are munchkin cats eternal kittens? Keeping his own counsel it seems … Sissy provides a good roundup of feline talent from human management to environmental management to solutions management to conflict management. We stand in awe. A somber Zak:

Petra unimpressed:

Ferdinand T. Cat generous:

Happy New Year from Boo & Spike and some interlopers. And of course, the glory of Daphne and Chloe.

Update I’m adding Bentley myself, mostly because he’s too cool (lives with two women who dote on him) and because he’s a Birman like Daphne. A glass raised to Bentley!

The Rhythm of Daphne and Chloe

leave a comment »

The cats have their own view of the pace of life here at Villa MartiniPundit, to which they are both precisely attuned. That this pace does not always match that of the human denizens is of little consequence. Behold the intensity of Chloe:

Resistance would be futile, if she cared about such things.

Note Daphne at rest, above.

Indeed, the very thought of resistance – how droll. As if one could be bothered lifting a paw.

One does have one’s dignity to consider. Two cool city cats cannot bestir themselves for the entertainment of mere humans. Of course, moments before, this was the scene:

All of us here at Villa MartiniPundit wish you and yours a very Happy New Year!
