Random thoughts and insights – always shaken, never stirred

Palin Won

And by more than enough.

My initial impression of the debate was too many numbers. He said, she said, who knew, who cared? But over the ninety minutes, the impression grew that Biden was trying too hard to avoid being condescending to the little lady. As a result, he came across as milquetoast.

Palin, on the other hand, was not a pit bull. Instead, she hit just the right not of aggressiveness while exuding homey charm with every answer. Her best moment came when she said that the Obama-Biden plan for Iraq was the “white flag of surrender.”

However, it remains to be seen how it will affect the race. To be sure, Palin shored up her credentials, put paid to the notion that she was somehow less ready that Obama or Biden (a laughable notion from the start), and established that a governor can actually know something about foreign policy.

Biden made no major gaffes, to his credit, but failed to ‘overawe’ the hockey mom with his accumulated acumen – such as it is. Let’s face it – Joe Biden is hardly an intellectual heavyweight. Palin proved she had a clue about pretty much everything. In the end, we’re left with the democrats arguing that we should believe they’re born-again tax-cutters, and that McCain and Palin will govern from the center. The first is believable only by the truly brainwashed, and the second is a leap of faith – but only for Palin. For this evening, Palin seized the Reagan mantle, and it’s clear will be a conservative in the Reagan tradition. It’s been twenty years, and not a moment too soon.
