Blair Wins with Less

leave a comment »

Tony Blair has won the British elections and Labour may now form a government. However, the returns thus far indicate that Labour has lost about a hundred seats from the last Parliament. That can’t be good news for Blair personally.

I don’t claim to know that much about British politics. There was a time when I followed them more closely, but I haven’t for several years, and so I’ll only note there is an interesting post mortem here. The conventional wisdom seems to be saying that Blair will soon need to cede the premiership to his Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown. I don’t know about that – although it would parallel Margaret Thatcher’s diminished third term when she was forced to step down in favor of the anemic John Major.

What I do know is that the big three survived the Iraq War: Bush, Howard, and now Blair. If Iraq was a liability at the polls, it certainly wasn’t a fatal one.
