Initial Thoughts on the Third Debate

A draw.

To be sure, I was hoping for more from the President, and Lord knows that Kerry becomes more irritating each time one hears him, but the fact is neither man scored a knockout blow. Neither man made a gaffe, although Kerry’s attempt to replace his litmus test with a “truth standard” was foolish. On substance, I’d have to call it a Bush win as much as he said, but he failed to rebut Kerry effectively when the Senator went off on misleading facts. Kerry continued to have a more effective debating style (regardless of what I think of his personal communication skills) and that rebutted a lot of what the President had to say by default. I would give the President more points in this debate than in the first, and so a draw is a slightly harder call here, but I don’t see anything that will prevent the MMD from claiming Kerry won.
