On the Subject of No-Bid Contracts

I am amazed at the vitriol expended by the Left against Halliburton.

Well, not really. It is after all, perfectly explicable. Dick Cheney was CEO of Halliburton and so attacking them is a way of attacking him and thus Bush. But it’s ignorant – ridiculously so.

Actually, I doubt very much that most of the Halliburton-bashers on the Left think it’s ignorant. They get all worked up on “no-bid” contracts and think some sort of fix is in.

For the moment, let’s say they’re right. Has anyone ever actually heard anyone on the Left suggest an alternative to Halliburton? No? Shocking.

There’s a reason for that. I suspect very few on the Left actually know who the competition might be for a contract to rebuild Iraq, or even care. After all, they’re interested in bashing Cheney – any outrage over the spending of taxpayer money is secondary. The idea that liberals are concerned about wasted taxpayer dollars is laughable.

There are three companies in the world who are qualified to take on the rebuilding of Iraq: Halliburton, Bechtel, and Schlumberger. The last one is French and I think even our friends on the Left can manage to understand that this Administration is unlikely to grant such a contract to a French company. The other two are American, but one of the two has experience in this sort of rebuilding – Halliburton. They gained that experience through a no-bid contract to reconstruct Bosnia granted by the Clinton Administration.

That’s right. Halliburton won a no-bid contract granted by the Clinton Administration to rebuild Bosnia which Al Gore arranged.

Oh, and Halliburton is actually losing money in Iraq. It makes one wonder why anyone pays attention to the Left anymore.
